Homemade Pirate Ship Cake With Jolly Roger

Homemade Pirate Ship Cake With Jolly Roger

I was requested to make a pirate ship cake on an ocean with an island. The Island includes Jolly Roger's bones!

After much research on this site I came up with my own version. I loved all the pirate ships on this site and everyone's posts were very helpful. I am happy with the way mine turned out.

I made a one layer sheet cake for the ocean. I colored buttercream blue and iced about 3/4 of the bottom layer. I put dowels in the ocean to support the pirate ship. I iced the rest of the sheet cake white and covered it with graham cracker crumbs.

I cut out a cardboard and wrapped it in tin foil the same shape as the ship so I could make the ship prior to placing it onto the ocean. I used 2 9X13 pans and made it more of a pound cake consistency. I made a chocolate buttercream. I cut out one 9X13 for the base of the ship and then used the other 9X13 to add the bows and poop deck. I used chocolate buttercream between all the layers to act as a glue.

I use pretzels as a railing and used Rolo's as canons. I piped the anchor and windows onto the ship as well with a gold color.

I used Rolo's and gum coins as gold on the ship and Island. I melted chocolate and smoothed it out and covered it with a thin layer of buttercream. I then piped an outline of Jolly Roger onto it and colored him in with piping gel. I just placed him on the cake and then covered around him in graham cracker crumbs.
