Captain Tex's Pirate Ship Cake
My son, Texas T!, is not quite out of his terrific two's yet so I decided to do the pirate theme for his 3rd birthday this year! This pirate ship cake was my first homemade cake so it was a bit overwhelming at first but as an interior designer by trade I turned it into a mini project. Research and design, the shopping list, budget, modifications, gathering supplies and decorations, and TIME! Coolest-birthday-cakes.com is where I began and it was so much fun once I got started and began to incorporated my own ideas!
For the ship I used chocolate cake mix in two round pans and one 9x13 pan. Cut the rounds in half and trim the bottom and stack together. Cut 3" off the rectangular piece and place on the back of the round section. Cut the remainder in half and carve the bow. Stack and place in front of the rounds, frost, and add your decorations!
I ordered the pirate figurines from birthdayexpress.com and made the sails from wood skewers and manilla resume paper(how appropriate for a stay at home mom right now!). Print out your own wishes and decals and paste on the sails and burn the edges.
Some of the goodies I used are malted milk balls, Rollo's, Hershey's chocolate sticks, money candy, and pretzels. My son talked about it all week!
