Coolest Pirate Skull Cake

I made this 6″ Pirate Skull cake and 85 cupcakes for a friend’s son’s first birthday. The theme was ‘Pirates, red and black’.

Half of the cupcakes were vanilla cakes and half were chocolate. I made homemade buttercream icing from the C&H Sugar Recipe and colored half of it red and the other half black.

The 6″ cake was a vanilla and chocolate marble cake from the leftover cupcake batter. I leveled the cake, crumb iced it then iced it, piped the bead trim and sprinkled red sugar on the top. I made the skull and cross bones out of MMF, coloring it accordingly. I used a picture I had from a previous cake, used an exacto knife to cut the pieces out and put it together. I then placed it on top of the cake. I used a toothpick to stencil the name, and then piped it on in black buttercream.

I piped the icing on the cupcakes using tip #12 and then sprinkled red sugar on them. I had made paper picks of red treasure chests and black skull and crossbones, a couple weeks prior, with my cricut. I now glued them double-sided to flat toothpicks. Lastly. I put the picks into the cupcakes. It was a hit and my friend said he is only going to order from me now!
