Pirate Treasure Chest Cake

For my son's pirate party, I wanted to make a pirate treasure chest cake. I used 4 13X9 chocolate cakes mixes for the bottom of the chest. The top part is made 5 round chocolate cakes, cut in half to make 10 halves.

I used Wilton icing on all of it, and I iced between all the cakes to make them stick together. I put it in the refrigerator overnight to get them to stay compacted. The day of the party, I iced the outside and put rods in the bottom half with the pearl looking covers for decoration. It was a great way to keep the top propped up.

I cut cardboard for the bottom of the lid and covered it with gold paper. Then, I used the gold paper to make the strips on the lid as well. I covered the top of the cake with candy necklaces, ring pops, chocolate gold coins, and jeweled colored sprinkles. My son "cut" the cake with a sword! It was the hit of the party.
