Homemade Pirates Treasure Chest Cake
I made the chest using 3 butter cakes cooked in a rectangle pan. I chose the one with the best rise to use as the lid.
I first cut the top off each cake and trimmed each to the size that I wanted. I them joined together with a simple butter cream icing. Two on the bottom and one for the top. I placed the top on a piece of chip board cut to size and covered in foil so that it would be supported.
I then iced the cake using a milk chocolate and butter mix and used a knife to get the wood look.
I used yellow colored fondant to make the straps and the lock and choc bits to look like nails. I handmade the skull for the top using a picture of the internet as a guide.
I propped the lid open with wooden skewers cut to the lengths that I wanted and decorated with choc money, candy necklaces etc.
It was a huge hit for my son's birthday party.
