Homemade Police Car and Stop Light Cake
For my son's 4th birthday, he wanted a police car cake. I decided to try my hand at this and purchased the Wilton car cruiser pan. I knew the cake wouldn't make enough to serve everyone at the party, so I decided to make a stop light to place the car on for more cake.
I made three 9" round cakes and iced them accordingly in red, yellow, and green. When placing them on the cake board they didn't fit together well so my husband used the cake pan to place and trim some of the edges off so the three cakes would be well fitted together.
I placed the police car on top and iced it first, mainly with the star tip. The wheels were Oreos, but in hindsight, I would have piped them on with a round tip and smoothed out with a wet finger and placed a hubcab of icing in the center. I also would have piped fenders along the sides in black. I used a star tip for the entire car except to make the headlights and thin lines to mark the doors, door handle and 04 on the roof. That was done with a thin writing tip.
I used a wider round tip to ice the stop light in black, mainly because I had icing left over. I find it hard to make black icing and not be bitter (red as well) so I bought the Wilton icing in a tube and the tips fit nicely on the end. If you make/tint your own red, be sure to use the no-taste red to keep it from getting bitter as you work toward your shade of red. Mine was bitter because I didn't have the no-taste red.
This homemade police car and stop light cake was a huge hit and my son was so excited! I used a Little People policeman we had to place beside the cake.
