Coolest Police Shirt Cake

I made this Police Shirt cake as a ‘test’ cake before I was to make my twin girl’s birthday cakes. I had never worked with fondant and had seen on this website several others stated it was easy. I decided to make my husband a father’s day cake and he is a police officer. I got the idea for the uniform shirt from Wilton’s website for Father’s Day cakes, a white collar shirt with a blue and red tie.

I made a 9×13 cake and let it cool. I then placed it on a piece of cardboard I cut from a box and then wrapped it in aluminum foil. I then crumb iced the cake and placed it in the fridge to stiffen. I kneaded the Wilton’s white fondant (1lb) then added blue Wilton icing coloring to make it blue. I rolled the fondant out to 1/4 in thick. I then rolled it up like you would a carpet, picked it up and unrolled it over the cake.

I smoothed it out with the palm of my hand, then cut off the excess with a knife. Took the knife blade to tuck and smooth the bottom. I kneaded and rolled out the left over fondant to make the embellishments. I made the pockets size from the imprint of the bottom of the icing coloring box.

To make the collar take a large, long rectangle of the fondant and fold in half. Then cut triangles out of the sides (the point ends at the bottom). Then shape the collar. I adhered it all with water. The stitching was done with the tip of a paring knife.

I then used fondant icing to write the badge (star cookie cutter) and name tag. The buttons are real and I adhered them with the icing. It was so easy, took me less than two hours. Not bad for having two 2 yr olds trying to ‘help’.

  1. Your idea and “how to do it” is very helpful! I am from Ontario and my son lives in Nova Scotia..so I am doing this concept on a large cookie, to send to him for his birthday as he loves to dress up! Therefore I thank you so much for your information! Have a Great Day!

  2. I made this cake today for my husband’s birthday… Only change I made was to make the badge out of fondant and wrote Happy Birthday on it. Can’t wait for him to see it! Thanks so much!
