Cool Homemade Pony Birthday Cake

For my daughter’s 6th Birthday, she decided to have a Pony Party at the Farm. And I decided -inspired by all the great cakes on this website- to make her Pony Birthday Cake. First, as with other similar cakes I cut the shape out of a 13×9 inch cake pan and used the cutout between head and neck for the ear. Then I chose to cover the horse with fondant. I got the white “ready-to-roll fondant by Wilton and dyed with Wilton icing color). I did put a thin coat of buttercream icing (Wilton recipe, very easy and delicious!) on the cake to allow the fondant to stick to the cake.

For the harness, the flowers and the badge, I also used fondant (already colored from Wilton Neutral/Primary colors Fondant Multi Packs). For the mane, I dyed some of the buttercream in golden yellow and used a pastry bag with a decorating tip (Wilton Multi-Opening #233 Decorating Tip). As for the base, I baked another of our favorite homemade chocolate cakes in a 12X15 pan and iced with remaining buttercream dyed green.

For the grass effect, I used the same tip than for the hair. I also added an extra layer of icing at the bottom of the horse to fill up the space between the fondant and the bottom cake. Finally I stuck the fondant fences cutouts (dried overnight) on the 4 sides of the cake.

My daughter and I were very happy with the results and the cake was a big hit with the friends and parents at her party! Thanks to this website for the inspiration!
