Homemade Pregnant Belly Baby Shower Cake
This Pregnant Belly Baby Shower Cake was such fun! I used many many ideas from this website to make it. I baked a yellow cake mix in a Pyrex bowl for the belly, and then cupcakes for the breasts. I lightly frosted them all with vanilla icing and then dove into the fondant.
This was my first time working with fondant and I was quite nervous. I bought the Wilton white fondant in the 24oz package and that was plenty for the whole cake. I split the fondant up and mixed one to make pink with icing coloring and then rolled it out using powdered sugar on my rolling pin to keep it from sticking to the counter or my pin. I laid it over the bowl cake, adjusted the ruffles at the bottom and then trimmed the sides. Then I mixed the brown, which took forever because I wanted a dark chocolate brown color. My hands were actually sore the next day from kneading the fondant for so long!
I then rolled that out and cut long strips with a pizza cutter and somehow managed to form the strips into a bow, which I used dabs of water to help "glue" them together.
I then cut out circles with a bottle cap top to use as polka dots. The breasts were piped in with matching pink frosting. I added the straps just for looks and extra detail and they were also thinly cut strips of fondant.
All in all, I really loved this cake and it was a hit at the baby shower! I will definitely work with fondant again, it doesn't have the best flavor or texture, but you can get such creative results with it!
