Homemade Purse Cake

Homemade Purse Cake

I made this purse cake for a girl's 16th birthday. She plays baseball, so her mom wanted a baseball somewhere on the cake.

The cake is just a 9 x 13 inch cake cut in half and stacked, then carved slightly to round the edges. (I used my Coach purse as model). I frosted it with buttercream frosting. The handles, zipper, and "leather" trim are all fondant and gumpaste. After the trim dried, I brushed it with a little clear vanilla to give it a sheen.

The cell phone (made to look like the birthday girl's phone), car keys, car remote, and key chain are also made from gumpaste and fondant. The zipper on the purse was painted with gold luster dust diluted with a little vodka (this evaporates quicker than water).

The cake was a big hit at the party! Even the boys at the party thought the cake was cool.

The chain for the key chain, the chain for the purse tag, and the little rivets on the purse were made from gold and silver dragees.
