Homemade R2D2 Birthday Cake

This R2D2 Birthday Cake was for my son's 5th birthday. He was really into Star Wars. I looked at several cakes from this site to come up with my final product. I made R2D2 laying down because I thought it would be easier to serve the cake. He is completely edible.

I made 3 9x13 cakes and 2 9"round cakes. The center of the body is 2 9x13 cakes stacked. His dome top is one 9" round cake cut in half and stacked on itself. The bottom of his body is the same. His legs are single layer 9x13 and his feet are stacked cake carved. It is best to carve the cake when it is cold so I suggest freezing or refrigerating before carving the feet and the bottom section.

The entire cake is iced with homemade whipped cream icing (Wilton recipe) since that is what my family likes. I used Wilton gel to color it. Red for light on top is red food gel. My son has an R2D2 toy that I used to make the markings. My son loved this and it makes a LOT of cake. We had quite a few people over and we only ate about a 1/3 of it.
