Cool Homemade Racetrack Cake with Viewing Stands

I created this racetrack birthday cake for my great-nephew’s 4th birthday. I designed it first on paper so that I would have the exact measurements for cutting the cake pieces and frosting the design. I used a large rectangular pan for the center and large round pan for the sides.

I used Nabisco Sugar Wafers to ‘build’ the viewing stand and Sour Patch Kids for the ‘people’ (this was all ‘glued’ together with frosting).

I then printed clip art’s of the man waving the flag to start the race and mechanic, tires and gas can for the ‘pit’. I also printed these in reverse so I could have front and back images. I glued them together mounted on coffee stirrers.

The race cars, flags and trophy are candles. The Happy Birthday Matthew flags are also home made and mounted on coffee stirrers. The frosting is butter cream (smooth for the track). I used a fork to simulate the grass growing on the green parts and sides. I used mini Oreo cookies with a dab of grey frosting in center (for tires) around the outer edge. The racing flags are purchased toothpicks.
