Homemade Rock Mining Cake
My family started gem mining this past summer and my nephew had a gem/fossil mining party and needed a cake to fit the theme. This Rock Mining Cake is what I came up with. The base is the bottom of the "mountain" covered in dirt (chocolate icing) and simple a round layer cake and a few "trees" made of pretzel sticks and green icing.
The "rock" at the top of the mountain is made of a 6" round cake, and 3 egg like shaped cakes trim and pushed together. I just carved out a "cave" and put on black icing (any cake will work), just make it bumpy. I used icing with black food coloring unevenly mixed to and "plopped" it on so it would stay rough.
The rocks are jelly bean rocks found at a cake store they also come in chocolate and the "gems" are scattered about to make the gems are made of rock candy (swizzle sticks) Tip: Gel food coloring goes along way with very little and does not mess up the texture of the icing.
Have fun. PS the birthday boy LOVED it as well as the owner of the mining company.
