Homemade Baby Safari Cake

Homemade Baby Safari Cake

This safari cake was made for a baby shower at a local hospital. It is two layers on bottom and two layers on top of a homemade yellow cake and homemade buttercream icing that I colored green for the bottom layer and blue for the top (grass and sky).

I tinted fondant with gel food coloring and made the animals all by hand (my first time trying this!) and had a blast. I don't have the tip # on me at the moment, but it is a grass tip, a wide one with a flat tip covered with small holes.

For the palm trees: I used a mold for the trunks, one that you normally use to make solid chocolates out of, and I tinted fondant green, rolled it flat and cut the palms out and then shredded the edges with a paring knife to give them definition.

It took me FOREVER to make this cake, but I loved the final outcome even though a few mishaps occurred and I had to change plans when I was three quarters of the way through.
