Cool Homemade Seashell Cake

This is a birthday cake I made for my mother-in-law’s birthday (Cheryl). This seashell cake is a dual tiered (yellow & chocolate layers) seashell ocean themed cake. Standard 10″ and 8″ cakes iced with homemade buttercream icing tinted an aqua/blue color.

All the seashells, sanddollars and coral are hand sculpted out of white fondant. After drying for about 2 days, they were brushed with silver luster dust. I could have tinted fondant the same color aqua/blue for a “cleaner” look, but wanted to finish in traditional icing.

Happy Birthday Cheryl!

  1. Hello, The cake looks great. May i ask where you got the molds for the sea shells? I am doing my wedding cake an i would like sea shells an coral candy molds an they are hard to find the neat ones.
if you could email me back that would be great. Thanks.

  2. I keep hearing from others that fondant doesn’t hold up well when placed on buttercream. Did you notice any problems, fondant falling apart, etc?

  3. Jessica. although I’m not the one that did this cake I have never had any problem putting tried fondant on buttercream. However once fresh butter cream is put on buttercream It’s very difficult and messy to take it off. When you put tried fondant on buttercream it’s like putting candy on it. Hope this helps.
