Coolest Shipwrecked Birthday Cake

This Shipwrecked Birthday Cake was made for my son’s 3rd birthday. The party was a pirate theme. I searched online for cake ideas. I made this cake from an idea I found online. However, my cake did not turn out quite like it was suppose to.

To make the cake, I used one cake mix and about 1 and 1/2 cans of icing. You use 2 round cake pans, let the cakes cool and then slice them in half. You stick the four layers together with icing in between layers and at the suggestion of others I used a drinking straws to help support the layers. You then then stand the layers up. I iced the cake or I guess crumb coated it and then put it in the freezer for about an hour to make it easier to ice. I then put another layer of icing on it to make it smooth.

With a butter knife I made lines around the ship to look like planks. I used large tootsie rolls for the railing of the ship. I was mostly finished with the cake and was going to leave the final details of adding a pirate and the sails for the next morning right before the party. The ship was looking really good when about 30 minutes later, I looked over and the ship had split in half down the middle. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. I couldn’t figure out what had gone wrong. I had to fix the cake but wasn’t sure how.

Then I thought of the idea to color some white icing blue and pour it through the middle of the cake to make it look like water coming up through the cake. I had the rubber sharks and added them for detail. It was looking better. However, I still made another cake for the party. I did realize what I did wrong in making the first cake before making the second one. From the ideas I had gotten online, it said to trim the bottom of the round edge of the cake so it sits flat. I had not trimmed my original cake because it seemed as if it was sitting flat. The weight of the cake eventually caused it to split.

For the party I had both cakes sitting out and actually the “shipwrecked” cake seem to be the most popular! So what I thought was a disaster turned in to a great creative cake!

  1. What a wonderful way to “save” your cake. I bet you were devasted when it happened, but I think it looks marvelous. I am going to attempt a pirate ship this weekend, so if that happens to mine, I am going to copy your idea!
