Homemade Skull and Roses Cake

Homemade Skull and Roses Cake

I had a request to do either a skull or a set of drums on a cake and I chose the Skull and Roses Cake. I honestly didn't come up with what I was going to do until tonight when I started making the cake.

I baked a 9" round two layer cake and iced it in gray buttercream. I made up a few red buttercream roses as I figured I would use them somewhere. My son is very artistic, (obviously from his father's side of the family as I can't draw a stick person right) so I asked him to draw a side profile of a skull.

I then put the drawing under a piece of waxed paper on my cutting board and filled it in with white icing. I froze it for about 30 minutes then flipped it over on top of the cake. It's only the second time I have used the frozen buttercream transfer method and it worked beautifully. I then placed my roses around the skull and piped in some green leaves.
