Homemade Skull Cake
This Skull Cake was an inspired birthday cake for my nephew. He had said to me that he wanted it gross and creepy. Well, since he is only 9 I figured I wouldn't go too gross! So, the skull is all cake! No rice krispie. Its a red velvet cake with cherry pie filling to act as blood when you cut into it.
The brain is marshmallow and the eyes and rats are gummies! The entire cake is edible! The dirt is Oreo cookie. To make the shape of a skull I simply caked two cakes in metal bowls. Stacked them and shaped them with a knife. All shaping was done after cake was frozen! Then I covered the cake in cream cheese buttercream and then with caramel flavored fondant with some gray icing coloring in it.
From there I hand sculpted the teeth and cuts on the face of the skull and painted the black and red within.
