Homemade Smiley Birthday Cake
My sister and I made this Smiley Birthday Cake for my son's birthday. I do not have much cake decorating experience so I wanted to come up with the absolute easiest design that would still be cool enough for a 10 year old.
It is a one layer 8in. round cake with marshmallow fondant colored with gel food coloring. The fondant was rolled out and draped over the already iced cake (icing keeps the fondant in place). We smoothed the sides by gently stretching the fondant to mold to the sides then trimmed the excess. The face and blood were drawn on by hand with decorating gels that are sold next to the icing.
We had to purchase everything needed to make this except for the gel food coloring that we had on hand and total cost came in at $10 with less than 2 hours of actual work (baking and cooling times not included).
