Homemade Snake Birthday Cake

This Snake Birthday Cake is a very forgiving cake, which is why I chose it for my first attempt at fondant. It is from 50 Easy Party Cakes.

Cake: White from a box, bunt pan . The design is so forgiving that it broke coming out of the mold and I “glued” it together with buttercream- no one knew. I used Chocolate Buttercream frosting, and homemade marshmallow fondant, made a few days before.

I frosted it and applied the fondant to the snake pit the night before. If I were to do it over, I would see if I could make the fondant with coco powder, instead of coloring it brown with the gel. I stretched the fondant over the bunt hole and it held. The little circles on the snake pit covered mistakes, as did the snakes.

I used fondant for the snakes, but modeling chocolate would work. Since this was my first attempt, I had extra colored fondant leftover, and the kids really enjoyed making their own extra snakes.
