Homemade Soccer Ball Birthday Cake
A friend's daughter was turning 12 and she is an avid soccer player. She wanted a Soccer Ball Birthday Cake for her birthday so I went set out to figure out how to make it dimensional rather than a half-ball cake from a mold. I used the store-bought mold to make two half-cakes and made an 8" round cake to place in the middle and help fill it out some.
I made a buttercream icing and used it to hold the layers together then covered the whole "ball" with it. I then rolled out white fondant and cut it into hexagonal shapes. Next, I used black food coloring to dye some of the fondant black and rolled that out and cut into pentagons. I placed the cut fondant pieces around my cake to make it look like a soccer ball.
