Homemade Sock Hop Cake

Homemade Sock Hop Cake

I made this Sock Hop cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday. She loves to dance around to the oldies so we decided on a Sock Hop.

This cake was made with the Wilton wonder mold and a 12 in round pan. I used a boxed pound cake mix flavored with almond in the “skirt” portion and the same cake mix flavored with strawberry in the round base. It took almost 2 full recipes in each pan (a total of 4 boxes). The pound cake was sturdy enough to withstand the weight of the fondant and the other cake without losing any of the great moist texture.

I covered both in fondant and matched the cakes poodle skirt with the poodle skirt my daughter wore to her party. I used store bought icing for the crumb cover and for the small details on the skirt. I wanted the poodle to match my daughter's dress so I printed it on paper, cut out, and “glued” on the skirt with icing. The belt is black ribbon.
