Homemade Sock Monkey Cake Design
This Sock Monkey Cake Design was a first on many levels! 1st birthday cake, first time to work with fondant, first Topsy-Turvy cake, first baby - okay, maybe I was crazy from oxytocin poisoning from all that breast feeding!
The cake was a banana cake (Martha Stewart website for recipe)with chocolate butter cream icing (traditional recipe) and marshmallow homemade fondant (youtube for recipes)- fondant was super easy to make and tasted good - unlike that yucky greasy stuff from the store (and much cheaper too). My son loved Sock Monkeys, so I tried to have them holding up the topsy-turvy cake hence the expressions on their faces.
I made the monkeys in 3 days advance and stored them in the fridge. Remember: wooden dowels are your friends as are bamboo skewers, which the monkeys were molded around and "stuck" in to the cake with.
