Homemade Space Theme Cake
This Space Theme Cake was made for my son's 6th birthday. The base coat of buttercream was done using a marbling technique - you just rough-spread two or more colors of buttercream onto the cake wherever you'd like them, then smooth them out together with a flat icing spatula so that the colors smooth together. It's a very easy technique and is very forgiving. This worked well to create a more realistic space look.
All of the planets in the solar system are represented on the cake, along with the sun and a rocket, and placed all around the cake. They were made out of white chocolate which I colored and then spooned, spread, piped and painted onto designs I traced onto parchment paper. Let them cool, and then they peel right off the paper. Then I used more colored chocolate on the face of each piece to give them more texture and dimension.
The stars I just piped on with a small circle tip in different pastel colors, because my son reminded me that not all stars are white! I wish I could add three more photos to show the other sides of the cake. This was a lot of fun to make, and my son and his friends absolutely adored it!
