Homemade Spongebob Birthday Cake

I made this Spongebob Birthday Cake for my son's 6th birthday. This is the 11th cake I've made since my wife got me a fondant decorating book about 9 years ago before my older son's 1st birthday. I had to pull an all-nighter to make this one due to obligations the day before the party. I think more than 1/2 of that time was spent coloring the fondant, so I plan on ordering pre-colored fondant for my next cake.

The cake is two 9x13 7-up cakes (lemon with a layer of blueberry pie filling in the middle). I’ve had good luck with 7-up cakes as they are sturdy, don’t crumble when shaping, and work well with any soda and extract flavor you can find. This was the easiest shaping job I’ve had – I just leveled the cakes and squared up the sides.

After covering the cake with vanilla frosting, I cut fondant “snakes” in half lengthwise and placed them around the sides of the face area to get the wavy outline. Next, I placed a thin layer of “olive drab” fondant around the sides and in the corners of the face, and a semicircle of reddish brown where the mouth is. These colors are what show through after I put the yellow layer on and cut holes in the face. A strip of white for the shirt also went on before the yellow. Finally came a thick layer of yellow and I carefully cut out the mouth and holes for the pores to reveal the colors beneath.

Everything else was pretty straightforward. I cut holes for the eyes and put in very thick rounded eyeballs. A piece of spaghetti keeps the nose from falling over and makes the whole thing technically edible.

Once I had finished the body, I grabbed about an hour of sleep and then it was time to start getting ready for the party. I ran out of time in the end, so I quickly added the arms and legs, but didn’t have time to do hands and feet. It still turned out to be one of the best I’ve made, and was a big hit at the party.
