Homemade Spongebob Squarepants Birthday Cake

I made this Spongebob Squarepants Birthday Cake for my son Ben's 6th birthday - he loves Spongebob! I looked on Coolestbirthdaycakes for ideas and combined a few of them and made it my own.

I just made a regular 13x9 boxed cake, and frosted it with vanilla icing that I dyed yellow, green and red using gel dyes. The pants and shoes are chocolate frosting. For the black outlining and the eyes, nose and mouth, I used a store-bought Wilton icing tube in black. I used the large end of a paper cup to help me make the eyes the right size and keep them even, by just gently pressing it into the frosting so I had lines to follow when piping the whites of the eyes on.

The shoulders and tops of the legs are Twinkies that I cut and frosted. The stems of the legs are frosting I piped onto the cakeboard, using a large tip. The shoes I also piped onto the cake board with chocolate frosting. The arms are from the toy Mr. Potato Head that I just pressed into the Twinkie pieces when I was done.
