Homemade Spongebob Squarepants Cake
I made this Spongebob Squarepants Cake for my neighbor's 5th birthday party. I made everything all from scratch, using a yellow cake and devil's food recipe from the BH and G cookbook. I used royal icing for the detail work, buttercream for the yellow, and a fudge frosting for the pants. Icing recipes were Googled, so I don't remember exactly which ones they were.
I used a liquid food coloring to color the royal icing, which I do not recommend. It tried to run and blend in with the buttercream icing, so I suggest a gel or powdered food coloring. Or perhaps not using the buttercream icing. Or maybe I will try a dessert paint next time. To fix the running of the color, I applied more buttercream around the details, in a raised pattern to keep it from spreading further.
