Homemade Star Wars Scene Cake

My son is really into Star Wars and wanted a Star Wars Scene Cake for his 4th birthday. I decided to make one myself and searched the internet and this site for ideas and this is what I came up with.

I started with 2 cake mixes. One baked in a 9 x 13 pan and another in a round pan to use for the volcano. I then cut a good sized circle from the round cake and placed it onto the rectangular cake. I then cut away portions of the circle to form a volcano shape. I didn’t worry about the crumbs because it added texture to the cake after frosting.

I then frosted the cake and the ‘volcano’ with chocolate frosting . Then I added red food coloring to white frosting and warmed in the microwave to drizzle over the cake to look like Lava.

The platform that R2D2 is sitting on, I made from placing melted white chocolate in a lid and placing in the refrigerator till hardened. I used cereal straws with a little white frosting as the glue to hold the platforms. I added little twist lighted bulbs attached with white frosting for added effect. I found the bulbs in the bridal section of Wal-Mart.

This cake was such a big hit and so fun to make. The adult guests thought it was store bought.
