Homemade Super Mario Bros. Birthday Cake
My hair stylist asked if I could do a Super Mario Bros. Birthday Cake and I said I'd give it a go! So glad I did as it's turned into the best cake I ever made. Mario and Luigi are made from gum paste.
I made the feet and legs first and pinned them together with edible glue cocktail sticks and let them harden. I then made the bodies and let them harden a little before attaching to the legs. The faces were made by paying close attention to pictures and I was particularly pleased with them and the heads were attached to the body with edible glue and cocktail sticks. Mario's 'victory v' arm also required attaching with a cocktail stick and glue and was supported while it dried.
The cake is a 10" vanilla cake filled with vanilla butter cream and strawberry preserve, coated with almond paste and vanilla fondant. The 'gumbas' are made from gum paste and the accents on the cake are vanilla fondant.
