Homemade Superbowl Cake

This Superbowl cake was a lot of fun to make. I decided to customize the standard yellow cake mix by adding lemon zest and juice and made a lemon curd for the filling. I used a frosting recipe I had from my cake decorating class, which is a really good versatile recipe.

The entire cake was done using 3 different sized star tips, although extremely painstaking, the effort was worth the oohs and ahs I got when I brought it to the party. I used the Wilton "football set" goalposts and players and I used sharpies to "paint" on custom jerseys on the players. I should have added more stars to the bases of the players to make them look free standing, but I ran out of time.

It took me approximately 3 hours to decorate the cake, start to finish.
