Coolest Thomas Birthday Cake

My granddaughter wanted a Thomas birthday cake for her fourth birthday. Using this website I gathered ideas to create this cake. The bottom is two layers using a 1/2 sheet pan. I used cake mixes as she wanted blueberry and strawberry cakes. However I would recommend a sturdier pound type cake (at least on the side where the train will set) as cake mixes are too light to hold the weight of the train without sinking a little.

Thomas is a Wilton 3D train pan and the car is an 8 inch loaf pan. Both were made with a triple recipe of 7UP pound cake.

The people were made from colored fondant using a clay mold I found at a local hobby store. The faces for Thomas, Edward, Percy and James were made with grey tinted fondant free hand. The week before the party I made the cakes and froze them along with the people and faces storing them in an air tight container in the fridge. The candy rocks came from the local candy store, some chocolate Twizzlers and fudge stick cookies completed the tracks.

I dug out the center of the car cake to make a place for the people to stand. Placed both Thomas and the car on top of the cake with a little icing underneath to secure. Thomas is also held in place with three dowels to keep him from tipping when the cake was moved. The faces are held in place with toothpicks all of which were place after all the decorating was complete. The center of the car was filled with frosting to make the children stand.

The frosting was applied using Wilton tips 233, 47, 3 and various star tips. It was a lot of work, but worth the expression on Laikyn’s face when she saw the cake. The cake weighed 18 pounds, 4 of which were frosting. Fortunately I had the forethought to purchase a bucket of Wilton frosting rather than making my own or I would have never had time to complete this cake!
