Homemade Thomas Cake

For my son's 3rd birthday my mother in law and I made a Thomas cake. I searched the internet for ideas and used some ideas I found from this website. I used small loaf pans to make all of the cars including Thomas.

For Thomas I used 2 loaf pans and 2 cupcakes. I baked all of the cakes a few weeks ahead of time and froze them. The morning of the party I took them out as I was about to start the cake. I covered a large piece of cardboard with white paper. For the based I baked a large sugar cookie and cut it into an oval. I drizzled some honey on the paper and put black licorice down to make the track. I then put Kit Kat's in between the licorice.

I also colored coconut with green food coloring and placed it in the middle, to look like grass. I frosted all of the cars and placed them on the tracks. Then I added different candy to each one. After adding the candy my mother in law star tipped the rest of the car. I added small Oreos for the wheels on the cars and regular Oreos for Thomas' wheels.

For Thomas' face I printed a picture that I found on card stock and stuck it on the front of the engine. I also used a Swiss cake roll cut in half for the funnel. My son really loved the cake and it turned out great!
