Homemade Thomas The Tank Engine Birthday Cake

Homemade Thomas The Tank Engine Birthday Cake

I made this Thomas The Tank Engine Birthday Cake using box cake mix. The pan is the retired up right train pan. It called for 6 cups cake mix. The bottom pan is filled to the rim, then top pan is added, then tied to secure it from separating during the baking process. It turned out great.

My 3 year old son Jacob is a huge Thomas fan and requested Culdee. Culdee is a purple engine in the Thomas series. I made my own fondant and tinted it black, grey and pink and red. The face is fondant. I cut it out with a circle cookie cutter and shaped it with fondant tools to resemble the face on Culdee.

The rest of the cake is frosted with tinted purple/pink frosting. Then the fondant accents were added. I placed the train on a flat plate and decorated the plate with tracks made of black fondant and added green grass.

I do not refrigerate fondant cakes, because moisture forms on the fondant and the colors can run and make a mess!
