Coolest Thomas The Tank Engine Birthday Cake

I made this Thomas The Tank Engine Birthday Cake for my friend’s son for his 3rd birthday. I started with a pile of stuff, not knowing what all I’d need. I used 2 cake mixes, frosting, candies, cookies, animal crackers, Nutter Butters, spaghetti, and a carrot.

Making this cake is featured step-by-step on my cooking blog, Kitchen Scrapbook. For Thomas, I layered rectangles of cake and carved out an engine, then frosted it with the right colors. The smoke is simply white frosting and the smokestack is a frosted carrot! The caboose and each car is frosting-covered cake with Nutter Butter wheels, chocolate chips for the coal, animal crackers in the circus car, and Popsicle sticks for hitches.

It was a lot of fun to make, hours well spent. One thing I wish would’ve been better is the face. I wanted it 3-D, but after spending quite a bit of time trying to shape it, I gave up and just piped it on.

I have 2 girls, so we’re more into Dora, Strawberry Shortcake, and princesses around here and don’t know much about Thomas the Tank Engine! That’s my excuse for not having a passenger car in the train. I found out later that he mostly pulls passenger cars. What this Thomas is pulling, though, is a coal car, a circus car, a tanker, and a boxcar, followed by a caboose.
