Homemade Thomas The Tank Engine Cake

This is a Thomas The Tank Engine Cake that I made for my son's 2nd birthday. I knew I wanted a Thomas cake, but for ideas I once again searched this website and came up with a few ideas.

The night before I baked the cakes, I printed out a picture of Thomas, taped it to the bottom of a cookie sheet and covered it with wax paper so that I could trace Thomas. I used white candy melts (from craft store) and melted it down and then colored it the colors I needed. I let it sit over night to completely harden.

I used 2 9x13 cakes - one chocolate, one vanilla. I layered the cakes using homemade buttercream icing. The top and 1/2 way down the sides were light blue, and the other 1/2 of the sides were a light green. Once iced, I was able to peel Thomas off of the wax paper and gently put the picture on the cake. For the sides of the cake I used fruit-by-the-foot and cut pieces for train cars. I used skittles for wheels, and other candy to fill in the cars. Piped white buttercream icing made the steam. I used white icing to make borders.

It was so easy to do, and even Thomas was edible!
