Coolest Thomas the Tank Engine Cake

My twins wanted a Thomas the Tank Engine Cake for their 2nd birthday. After looking at this site many times for ideas I came up with a plan. I roughly scaled up the Thomas we have for the bathtub. He was a little more square in shape than the actual Thomas train we have for their train set. My overall cake dimensions ended up being 13 inches high and 19 inches long.

I baked 4 half sheet cakes, dark chocolate of course. After baking, I filled each layer with cookies and cream mousse and froze it solid for sculpting. I made a template to use as a guideline for the sides of the cake and free sculpted the rest. I should mention that 4 days prior to decorating I made my Thomas face out of fondant so it would dry. The face was 6 inches round and I had 2 dowels inserted into the back to help with placement when I attached it to the cake (it was fairly thick, which made it a little heavy to attach without dowels).

After the sculpted cake was finished and frosted I put it back in the freezer to set up. Then the fun began. I covered the cake in fondant and decorated it as close as possible to the Thomas train we used as a model. I spent 2 days on this cake, but my kids were so happy with it, and all the party guest were amazed. One of our guests didn’t think it was a cake, she thought it was a toy! I am so glad I took the time to make this special cake for my babies! Hope you like the photos!
