Homemade Thomas the Tank Engine Scene Cake
This Thomas the Tank Engine Scene Cake was my first fondant cake attempt for my grandson Jacob's second birthday. I used a 17 inch oval pan and two 10 inch oval pans. Tidmouth shed was the 10 inch cut in half with decking. I used fondant for all the trimmings but used icing around the base of the cake for edging.
The trees were made from mini ice cream cones and I varied the heights by cutting the cones. Then I iced and applied fondant and pinched with my fingers to create depth of branches. The train trestle was Styrofoam coated with icing then fondant.
The fondant was homemade marshmallow and icing sugar and I also bought some store bought fondant for comparison since it was my first time. I watched many online videos of making fondant and they all said "til you have the right consistency" but I didn't know what that was so that's why I bought to get the "feel" of what they were talking about. Homemade is much tastier and was a lot easier to work with.
The water was just buttercream icing and I dipped a fork in blue color jel and stroked through the icing.
