Homemade Thomas The Train Birthday Cake

Homemade Thomas The Train Birthday Cake

For my son's 2nd birthday I wanted to make him a Thomas The Train Birthday Cake. I used some ideas from other cakes on this site and was really happy with how it turned out.

I made 2 ten inch round cakes, 3 eight inch round cakes, and then one cake made inside an oven-proof cereal bowl. I stacked the cakes on top of each other, with icing between the layers. I cut a strip out of the middle middle of two of the eight inch layers and put in a tunnel using a long tin can (I used a baked beans can). Then I added more layers on top of the can. Be sure to secure all of the layers together with a few wooden dowels.

After getting the layers all together, I crumb coated the entire cake and then frosted it in green, tan, gray and blue to look like grass, rock/cave, and sky. I used cookie crumbs with frosting on top to make a track.

I added a tree, bugs, rocks and clouds with icing. Thomas and Harold are from a train set we bought as one of his birthday presents- I made it so Thomas is coming through the tunnel. It's 6 months later and my little boy still talks about his Thomas cake!
