Homemade Thomas The Train Birthday Cake

Since I couldn't find a Thomas the Train cake pan, and I needed to do the cake within a few days, I bought the Wilton train cake pan. It wasn't the same shape as Thomas, so after baking the cake I used a knife to cut the cake to better match the pictures of Thomas I found on the internet.

His nose or front was different, as was his smoke stack and his wheels. Then I simply decorated him to look as much like Thomas as possible.
For children's cakes I usually use a star tip for most of it, it is fast and easy and covers well without giving it a "crumb coating" of icing in most cases. I didn't have a lot of time to do this, and this method works well.

This Thomas The Train Birthday Cake was for my new step grandson's 3rd Birthday. He really liked it. I always warn parents that the black icing will stain clothes - as will the other deep colors like the red.

Thanks for posting these pics. I bought the Wilton train pan yesterday and was brainstorming on how to turn it into Thomas. You did a great job!
