Coolest Thomas the Train Birthday Cake

This Thomas the Train Birthday Cake was made for my son Jessy for his 3rd birthday! He is obsessed with Thomas!

I used a 13×9 pan, a half filled loaf pan and a 1/4 filled loaf pan with chocolate cake mix.

I froze the cakes after they cooled and then I cut them into the shapes I needed. Everything is cake except for the round face part, it is a Hostess Ding Dong attached by toothpicks.

The stacks are small marshmallows and wheels are Oreos. I used crumbled Oreos for coal in the back of Thomas, everything else is icing (no fondant used). The freezer was my friend when making his face. I would put a blob of icing and freeze it for a few minutes and then use a little water and shape it. I also used really fine Wilton tips to shape his eyebrows and eyes.

I used balloon candles which fit perfectly! I had so much fun trying to figure out a way to do this. I’ve never made anything like this before. I used tips from the computer about how to make smooth icing which helped immensely.
