Homemade Thomas the Train Cake
This Thomas the Train Cake was made for a 4 year old who loves Thomas. The first layer was a 2-layer 10 inch round yellow cake. Second layer was a chocolate 2 layer. Both layers were covered in buttercream. All accents were fondant. The Thomas on the top was made of rice krispy treats covered in fondant.
The design incorporated several ideas from the Cakecentral website. The tunnels and Thomas' friends were made from a hand made template. The mountains on the second layer where cut free hand from fondant. The clouds were piped on with buttercream, tip#12. The birds were also piped on.
I placed a small fondant ball under the train faces to project the noses. I tried to make each face look a little different by changing the eyebrows and smiles.
The tracks were made by cutting slices of brown fondant and imprinting a woodgrain with a knife.
The rolled fondant rail gave me problems. The fondant did not cooperate. I couldn't get it quite thin enough and was running out of time.
Tristan didn't notice. He loved his cake.
