Thomas the Train Cake

Thomas the Train Cake

I made this Thomas the Train cake for my son's 3rd birthday party which was themed Thomas the Train. I used an oval cake pan and made a homemade confetti cake with chocolate chip buttercream filling. Two days in advance, I made the rocks and railroad ties out of store bought fondant.

I cut sugar ice cream cones to various sizes and used royal icing to make the trees. I also made the royal icing flowers for the top border. To assemble the cake, I iced the sides with gray buttercream and the top w/green buttercream. I used store bought blue gel icing to make the pond and outlined it with fondant rocks.

I crushed graham crackers in a food processor to make the dirt. I also cut cinnamon sticks to varying lengths to make the logs. Once I made the "3" on top of the cake with the railroad ties, I cut strips of gray fondant to make the actual rails.

The Thomas on top of the cake is a candle I found at the party supply store. This cake was by far my most ambitious, but my son and the party guests loved it, so it was worth every second of work!
