Coolest Thomas the Train Mountain Cake

This is my homemade Thomas the Train Mountain cake.

I used two box mixes and three pans: one large round, one medium round and one small round. I also used half of a ball pan set. I inserted three skewers to hold all of the layers together and cut off the tips so that you couldn’t see them.

I frosted the bottom layer green. I would have liked it to have been a darker green but I ran out of time. The top three layers were sky blue. I wrote “Happy Birthday Andrew” on top and decorated the grasses and flowers with candy mold decorating bottles. I always use these bottles when I’m not using any special tips. I find them easier to work with as you only need one hand; they are not messy, I have more control, and, since I have several of them, I just preload them with the different colors all at once.

I cut out a hole in the second layer and inserted a small soup can. I put some frosting in the inside bottom of it to hold the train in place. I used mini Kit Kat candy bars for the train tracks. If I had had more time, I would have crushed graham crackers for dirt on the base of the second layer. The circus train animal crackers were a last minute decision as my son loves them.

The cake was actually pretty easy to make and fun to do. Everyone loved it, especially the kiddos. They kept walking over just to take a look at it and were really excited to eat it. My son kept saying “Choo Choo Twain cack” (Choo Choo Train Cake) with the biggest smile on his face.

  1. My son is turning 4 & loves Thomas, so I’m going to try my hand at making him a Thomas cake. I can only hope my cake turns out half as good as yours. Your cake looks great! Thanks for the inspiration
