Homemade Tinkerbell Cake

My almost 3 yr old REALLY wanted a Tinkerbell Cake for her birthday and I thought the head only Wilton one was kind of boring. So, I actually looked at this website for ideas, and knowing we were having a lot of guests (families of the kids), I knew I needed a lot of cake.

I used 4 "Funfetti" cake mixes for this masterpiece, 2 for the "grass field" and 2 for the mold/skirt of Tink. I used a full-sized (like a Barbie) Tinkerbell doll that I got at Target.

I really wanted several shades of green included- 2 different shades for her skirt, and a different shade for the grass. Rather than buy numerous dyes, I used my basic Wilton colors set and just mixed colors until I had exactly what I wanted.

I couldn't even begin to tell you which tips I used because I have the huge tip set and just kept trying new ones although I did use the standard star for the dress (I think it's 18).

It took a really long time for the mold to cook all the way through probably because it was 2 full cake mixes so be prepared. Also, be sure to put it on a cookie sheet in the oven, it definitely will spill over. I greased both pans with Crisco and then sprinkled with flour before putting in the cake mix and had no trouble with sticking. I also let the cake cool completely before removing it from the pans. I did the "grass" on the bottom cake before putting the skirt/mold on top. Because I'd have to drive with the cake to the park, I anchored the top to the bottom with kabob sticks, which worked great.

I used a sharp paring knife to increase the size of the whole in the mold to insert the doll and I wrapped her in plastic before sticking her in. I packed little extra bits of cake around her waist to hold her steady. The wand is actually one of the 3 candles, which I just got in the party section at Target.

It took me about 4 hours to complete the cake and my daughter and all the guests loved it. Plus, despite the long cooking time, the cake was still moist. Win for everyone!

So many special touches! Love the pearl necklace! And your idea to use a candle as a wand is very clever. What a piece of art.
