Homemade Topsy Turvy Birthday Cake

This Topsy Turvy Birthday Cake is my very first Topsy turvy cake and I'm really proud of it. I was a wreck making it.

I used 2 chocolate cakes of each size 10",8",6". I froze the cakes for about 1-2 hours before I started carving. I stacked each set and before I iced the top I carved the slope on all three. Then I used the bottom of the cakes pans to make a template of the size and used that to carve the hole in the top of each cake.

I then iced all the cakes. I used 6 small dowels to support each layer and also drove a wooded skewer through the bottom 2 layers to make it more stable. I made the 30 and stars out of fondant and let sit for 24 hours. The stars had wire in them and I wanted them to be dangling from the top, but they were too heavy or I didn't do them right and that didn't work out. I liked them on the cake the way they ended up, so it was okay. I did all the cirles and let them sit on the cake over night. Lastly, I'll share my big cheat. I used whoppers for the balls. I love doing any cake with chocolate because if I need balls, I can use them and save a bunch of time. Rolling 100 or more fondant balls is not my favorite part of making cakes.

Hopes this helps and gives lots of ideas to others. If I can make a Topsy turvy cake, anyone can!
