Homemade Tractor Birthday Cake
I made this Tractor Birthday Cake for a friend's little boy who loves John Deere tractors. I got the idea from some of the cakes on this site and then took it and made some tweaks to the other ideas.
I used two loaf pans (1 cake mix each) to make the tractor. The cab is half a loaf pan, the other half I used to cut out the two large wheels in the back (I cut one large cylinder out of it and then cut it in half to make 2 tires). The front wheels are made from cupcake bottoms. I carved the front of the cake into the shape of a tractor, slightly smaller in the front and curved. I made the hay bales out of the extra pieces of cake I had left.
I recommend freezing the cake prior to frosting it to cut down on the amount of crumbling on the carved pieces. Once it was carved to a shape I was happy with I frosted it with buttercream and Wilton's decorator's icing for the detail work. The hay is toasted coconut with a touch of golden food coloring.
This cake tasted great and the kids and family loved it!!
