Homemade Train Birthday Cake

I used a #1 cake pan for the base of the train birthday cake and used the Nordic Ware 3D train cake pan to create each train car. I used box cakes but combined a yellow and chocolate cake mix so that the cake was marbled.

I iced the cake and train cars first with chocolate icing. I used canned frosting and an icing bag with decorative tips to decorate each train car and the "grass" on top of the cake. I added chocolate chunks, chocolate chips, and pirouette cookies as the cargo for the train cars.

I used licorice rope for the train tracks and for the "dirt" inside the train tracks and around the edges of the base cake, I used smashed pirouette cookies. Since this was my son's first birthday, I decorated one of the trains cars especially for him.

I gave him his own train car so that he could smash it all over his face and play with it. He loved it and everyone was impressed with how realistic the cake looked!
