Coolest Train Cake

All little boys love trains, so we decided to throw a choo choo party for my son’s 3rd birthday. We live in small community and we don’t have much for professional cake decorators, so we took it upon ourselves to create our own train cake. It turned out much better than expected!

We started by baking three cake mixes using both loaf pans and mini loaf pans. We cut the big loafs into fourths and leveled out the top of all cakes so they were flat on top, making them easier to decorate. We ended up with half a cake mix left over, which we poured into a 9X9 pan and decorated with the words, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAYTEN” and placed in the center of the table.

We made our own frosting using powdered sugar, cream cheese, flavoring, and bright food coloring. Before frosting the little loafs, we placed them on cardboard covered in tinfoil. This made it much easier to move them in and out of the fridge and set them up in train formation. After frosting the cakes, we refrigerated them for a few hours before decorating.

The picture on the engine was a small picture printed from our home computer and laminated.

Along with the cake, we sent out train invitations, ordered a red bandana scarf, conductor hat, and whistle for each child, set up a ride on train in our front yard, and cut sandwiches using a large train cookie cutter.

The kids loved the party and were very impressed with our cake!
