Coolest Transformer Bumblebee Car Cake

My son was really into transformers, so for his 4th birthday, I knew I wanted some kind of a Homemade Transformer Bumblebee Car Cake. I took a look at this site, and saw some Optimus Prime cakes that I thought were manageable, but of course his favorite was Bumblebee. I had never done a 3D cake or worked with fondant before, but I took a stab at it.

I baked a regular 13×9 cake. I cut out one piece for the bottom and another smaller piece to sit on top, and then carved it as much like a camaro shape as I could. I made it much too small, but we didn’t have very many guests, and we cut small pieces. If I were to do it again, I’d definitely make more cake, and make it longer and higher.

I used gel food coloring to color the store bought fondant. I rolled out a piece large enough to cover the whole car, and then cut off the excess. As you can see, it made the bottom kind of a mess, but being my first time working with fondant and all, I didn’t know how else to do it. I would love to have made it sit up off the cake plate, but didn’t know how to achieve that.

I formed the fondant around the cake, and then used a plastic orange peeler (best tool I had on hand) to add the details. I just winged it with forming the side mirrors and bumper. I used frosting to attach the various details, but now I know I could have just used water, and it wouldn’t have made a white mess, so you can learn from my mistakes.

I rolled out black, red and gray fondant, and free handed the shapes for the windows, stripes, lights, wheel covers, etc. Because my cake was so small, I couldn’t use Oreo’s for the wheels because that would have been totally out of proportion. I can’t remember now what I used (this was last years cake). I just wrapped it with black fondant. I should have cut more of the cake out to form a wheel well (if that’s what you call it), but ended up just pushing it in as far as I could.

It wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be, and I made a lot of mistakes, but I think it was a good 1st attempt, and my son loved his cake which is always what really counts.

Oh one last thing. I couldn’t figure out how to make the logo, so I just printed one and cut it out and pasted it on.

  2. Seriously, one of the best Bumblebee cakes I’ve seen. I wish I could put fondant on a cake without any creases. It seriously mystifies me! I can never cover a 3D surface with fondant. Maybe I should practice with fabric or something. How did you do it?
