Coolest Treasure Chest Birthday Cake

I made this treasure chest birthday cake for a boy who attends the kindergarden where I work. It is just a rich chocolate cake covered in organic chocolate buttercream then white chocolate flavoured fondant.

I tinted the fondant light brown to start with then rolled it to the size I needed. I then marked the width of the planks and then using a toothpick I made the wood grain effect. Using brown colouring paste mixed with vodka I painted the fondant then let dry. Once that was finished it was just a matter of putting the fondant on the cake, making strips of fondant and colouring with gold lustre dust and then putting the lid on chest.

I supported the lid with thin dowel. Next I put the gold coins in place and then sprinkled brown sugar around the bottom.

Thanks for looking!

  1. Your cake is sooo amazing!! It looks so real!!!
Just out of curiosity …when you said you marked the planks before you made the wood grain effect with a toothpick. What did you use to mark it?

  2. Hi anonymous,

The vodka evaporates leaving the fondant dry. If you used only the food colouring paste the cake would remain wet and sticky. It is used by most when painting using food colouring. Only about 1/2 tsp of vodka is used over the whole cake. There would NO adverse effect on anyone eating it!
